(GNB Desk)- A group of schoolgirls who were abducted last week from a boarding school have been released and safe, Nigerian governor said Tuesday.

Dr. Bello Matawalle, Nigerian governor, confirmed that 279 schoolgirls were freed.

Governor Matawall said in a post on Twitter early Tuesday- “Alhamdulillah! It gladdens my heart to announce the release of the abducted students of GGSS Jangebe from captivity. This follows the scaling of several hurdles laid against our efforts. I enjoin all well-meaning Nigerians to rejoice with us as our daughters are now safe”.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said in a post on Twitter “I join the affected families and the people of Zamfara State in welcoming and celebrating the release of the abducted students of GGSS Jangebe. This news bring overwhelming joy. I am pleased that their ordeal has come to a happy end without any incident”.

The government initially said 317 girls were abducted, but today revised the number to 279 without explanation, media reported.

Criminal gangs, referred to locally as “bandits,” abducted the girls from the Government Girls Junior Secondary School in Jangebe town on Friday, in the latest in a series of mass kidnappings of students in the West African nation.

Criminal gangs, referred to locally as “bandits,” have increasingly been involved in kidnappings, rapes, and other crimes across central and northern Nigeria. The gangs are often driven by financial motives — kidnapping children and others, and holding them for ransom. Kidnappings for ransom by armed groups, many of whom carry guns and ride motorcycles, are common across many northern Nigerian states.
