Nepal has been gripped by renewed calls for the restoration of its monarchy and Hindu identity, sparking heated political debates and widespread unrest. Pro-monarchy protests led by figures such as Durga Prasai, Rabindra Mishra, and Dhawal Shamsher Rana have escalated dramatically in recent weeks, resulting in violent clashes, arrests, and injuries.

The protests gained momentum in Kathmandu, where demonstrators clashed with police. Three protesters were shot during the unrest, including Sabin Maharjan, who tragically passed away. Two others are receiving treatment at Bir Hospital, with one sustaining a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The police have denied allegations that protesters were shot from behind, but calls for an independent investigation are mounting, with demands for accountability and immediate action against any police brutality.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli addressed the parliament regarding the incident at Tinkune, providing details of the unrest on March 29. Oli condemned the violence and accused former King Gyanendra Shah of fueling the turmoil. He highlighted that Shah’s statements, including a call to “move forward and provide support,” had incited unrest across the country. Oli also revealed that Shah had organized events to rally public sentiment and allegedly appointed a so-called “people’s commander” to orchestrate violent activities. The Prime Minister assured lawmakers that Shah would not be granted impunity, and he urged investigations into the former monarch’s role.

Meanwhile, Durga Prasai, a prominent leader in the royalist movement, has been declared wanted by the police. Authorities have accused him of inciting violence and are actively searching for his arrest. However, Prasai has released a video message claiming that he has not fled and is currently taking shelter in a temple in Kathmandu for his safety. In the video, he stated that he is not far from the authorities and emphasized that his actions were driven by concerns for his security.

The Kathmandu District Court has charged Rabindra Mishra, Senior Vice-President of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), and Dhawal Shamsher Rana, the party’s General Secretary, with treason. Both were arrested during the protests and accused of inciting violence and organizing criminal activities. Their detainment has sparked controversy and debate within political circles.

As political tensions rise, Nepal’s parliament has become a battleground for heated discussions on the monarchy debate. The unrest underscores the challenges Nepal faces in achieving stability and unity, with royalist sentiments highlighting divisions and dissatisfaction with the current political leadership. The nation stands at a crossroads, grappling with its history while navigating its path toward the future.

This resurgence of royalist fervor raises critical questions about Nepal’s political trajectory and the enduring complexities of its governance.
