The government of Nepal has issued a new set of guidelines to regulate the use of social media in the country, aiming to make it more organized and dignified. The ‘Guidelines for Regulating the Use of Social Media, 2080’ were published by the Ministry of Information and Communication on Monday.
According to the guidelines, all social media platforms operating in Nepal will have to register with the ministry within six months of the publication of the guidelines. The platforms will also have to comply with the laws and regulations of Nepal, respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity of the country, and protect the rights and interests of the users.
The guidelines also prohibit the creation and use of anonymous or pseudonymous identities (fake IDs), pages or groups on social media, as well as the production, sharing or commenting of content that is false, misleading, defamatory, abusive, obscene, violent, hateful, discriminatory, or harmful to the marital status and family status of others.
The ministry will monitor and supervise the implementation of the guidelines, and take necessary actions against the violators, including blocking, deleting, or suspending the accounts, pages, groups, or content that are found to be in breach of the guidelines.
The government of Nepal said that the guidelines were formulated to prevent the misuse and abuse of social media, and to promote its positive and constructive use for the benefit of the society and the nation. The government also urged the users to use social media responsibly and respectfully, and to report any violations to the ministry or the concerned authorities.
