Nepal’s Home Ministry (MoHA) has expressed deep concerns over the act of burning an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while staging a protest. The act which was done by the members of the student union affiliated with Madhav Kumar Nepal led-CPN (Unified Socialist) party, was termed as “disgraceful actions”, Nepal Home Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry issued a press release on Sunday, showing concerns over the ‘defaming’ of the Prime Minister of a neighboring country and staging protests against him.

The ministry has requested people to not carry out any action “that may hurt the dignity and respect of the friendly nations.”

The ministry also warned to take legal action against anyone who tries to take the law into their hands and has announced to control such actions in the future.

The CPN-Unified Socialist is a newly formed party led by Madhav Kumar Nepal and is part of the coalition government led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

They had staged a protest against the alleged involvement of the Indian Sashstra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel in an incident in which one Jaya Singh Dhami disappeared into the Mahakali river in the Darchuala district of Nepal.

“The activities of chanting slogans, holding demonstrations, protests, and burning effigies to tarnish the image of the neighboring friendly nation’s Prime Minister has caught the attention of the Home Ministry. The ministry of home affairs expressed great objection towards such reprehensible and disgraceful actions,” the Home Ministry said in a statement.

“The government of Nepal is trying its best to improve its relationship with friendly countries and will not allow anyone to go against any foreign nation,” the press release read. “We urged everyone not to do anything that can hamper our relations with any country by staging agitation against their leaders.”

After being criticized for not solving the incident and alleged involvement of Indian SSB, it said, “We have a long tradition of solving the dispute with the neighboring nation through diplomatic channels and mutual dialogue. In future as well, diplomatic initiative and mutual discourse will be utilized while solving any dispute.”

Earlier, some members of the student union affiliated to CPN party staged protests and burned an effigy of Indian PM Narendra Modi, to protest against the incident in which Indian SSB men allegedly cut off the cable of an improvised cable crossing which a Nepali national, one Jaysing Dhami was using to cross the Mahakali River.

Dhami, who fell into the river after the cable he was holding on to was cut allegedly by Indian SSB men, has been missing since then.
