(Kathmandu- GNB): Government of Nepal has signed a peace agreement with an outlawed Maoist splinter group – Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) today.
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplab’ emerged out of hiding on Friday after the government lifted a ban on his Nepal Communist Party group so it could take part in the public signing of the peace agreement.
The three-point peace agreement was signed at a ceremony in Kathmandu, according to a joint statement issued by Home Affairs Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and CPN talks team head Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma ‘Prakanda’ in the presence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, CPN General Secretary Chand and cabinet ministers, among others.
Under the peace deal:
- the government will lift its ban on the group
- release all party members and supporters from jail and drop all legal cases against them.
- In exchange, the rebel group agreed to give up all violence and resolve any issues through peaceful dialogue.
“Nepal has entered a peaceful era. There is no more violence in Nepal or any violent conflicts left in Nepal,” Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli said at the ceremony.
Addressing the agreement signing ceremony in Kathmandu earlier on Friday, Biplsb said that their party is highly committed to honoring the three-point deal reached with the government. “Our party will abide by the agreement that the two sides reached on Thursday,“ he added.
The revel communist group had split from the Maoist Communist party lead by Puspa Kamal Dahal (Prachand), which fought ten years with government army between 1996 and 2006.
A peace accord was signed in November 2006, when the Maoists gave up their armed revolt, agreed to the United Nations-monitored peace talks and joined mainstream politics.
The Maoist fighting had left 17,000 people dead, hundreds missing and many more maimed.
