Constituent Assembly Chairman and CPN (UML) Vice Chairman Subash Chandra Nembang passed away due to a cardiac arrest on Tuesday night at his residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu. He was 71 years old.
Nepal is in mourning after the sudden demise of Subash Nembang, the Constituent Assembly President and a veteran politician.
Nembang was immediately taken to the Teaching Hospital in Maharajganj, but he could not be revived. His death was confirmed by the hospital sources around 1:15 am, local time. The news of his passing has shocked and saddened the entire nation, as well as the political fraternity.
Nembang was a senior leader of the Nepal Communist Party-Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and a Vice President of the party. He was also a member of the House of Representatives from Ilam constituency no. 2, and had won the parliamentary elections consecutively since 2056 BS. He had previously served as a member of the National Assembly from 2048 to 2052 BS.
Nembang was widely respected for his role as the Speaker of the Constituent Assembly that promulgated the Constitution of Nepal. He had also chaired various parliamentary committees and sub-committees, and had been actively involved in various party activities. He was also a senior advocate and a former lecturer of law.
Nembang is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. His family members and relatives are in deep grief over his untimely loss. The government has declared a public holiday on Wednesday to pay tribute to Nemwang, and has announced that he will be cremated with state honors.
Many political leaders and dignitaries have expressed their condolences and tributes to Nemwang, and have praised his contributions to the country’s democratic transition and constitution-making process. Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda, Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire, CPN UML President KP Sharma Oli, and other prominent figures have visited the Teaching Hospital to pay their respects to Nembang.
