Mukesh Ambani, the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, India’s most valuable company by market value, has received a death threat via email, according to police sources. The email, sent from an unknown sender, demanded Rs 20 crore from Ambani and threatened to kill him with the “best shooters in India” if he failed to comply.
The email was sent to Ambani’s official email address on Thursday evening, and was also copied to the Mumbai police commissioner and the chief minister of Maharashtra. The police have registered a case under the Indian Penal Code sections for extortion, criminal intimidation and threatening to cause death or grievous hurt. The cybercrime unit of the Mumbai police is probing the origin and authenticity of the email.
This is not the first time that Ambani, who has an estimated net worth of $91.2 billion as of August 2023, has faced death threats. In the previous year, Mumbai police arrested an individual from Bihar who had made anonymous calls threatening Ambani and his family members. In 2014, a car laden with explosives was found near Ambani’s residence in Mumbai, which was later traced to a fugitive gangster.
Ambani is one of the most influential and powerful businessmen in India, who has built a vast empire spanning sectors such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, telecommunications, retail and digital services. He is also known for his philanthropic activities and his lavish lifestyle. He lives with his wife Nita Ambani and three children in a 27-storey skyscraper called Antilia, which is valued at over $1 billion.
