Russia said Friday it had taken control of Soledar on Thursday evening, a salt-mining town in eastern Ukraine that has been a hotspot of fighting in Moscow’s offensive.
The defense ministry said that “on the evening of January 12, the liberation of the city of Soledar was completed, which is important for the continuation of successful offensive operations” in Donetsk. It referred to a region in eastern Ukraine that Moscow is seeking to capture fully.
Kyiv has denied that Russia is in control of the eastern Ukrainian town of Soledar. Ukraine said that heavy fighting is ongoing.
“Severe fighting is going on in Soledar,” said Sergiy Cherevaty, a spokesman for the eastern group of the Ukrainian armed forces. “Ukraine’s armed forces have the situation under control in difficult conditions.”
Soledar is located near the strategic city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, a large transport hub through which Ukrainian troops are supplied with weapons, military equipment, and ammunition.
The heavy fighting has been going on for several months for the control of Bakhmut.
