On Friday, the Australian Federal Police found more than 800 kilograms of cocaine. Three men associated with the international crime syndicate who tried to smuggle the drug have been arrested.

Police have charged three men allegedly linked to a transnational serious organized crime syndicate that attempted to smuggle more than 800kg of cocaine into Australia hidden on a bulk cargo carrier.

As per police, on May 24, the Western Australian Police Force and the Volunteer Marine Rescue Service helped the group of a 10m cabin cruiser in distress close to Rottnest Island, 22km away.

The police were told by the three men on board that they had noticed a problem with the ship’s engine but had no sailing experience.

According to the police, the Royal Australian Navy clearance divers retrieved 28 large packages wrapped in blue plastic from the water and another package was retrieved once the tank was drained. Each of the 29 packages contains numerous one-kilogram blocks of a white powdered substance. Forensic tests returned positive results for cocaine.

The third person was detained in Sydney, while two of the three were detained in Perth on Wednesday. The accused are aged 21, 25, and 29. According to the police, they could receive a maximum sentence of life in prison if they were found guilty.
