At least 12 people were killed and 23 others injured when a minibus collided with a container truck in India’s western state of Maharashtra on Sunday morning, police said.
The incident took place in the Vaijapur area of the expressway, around 80 km away from the district headquarters and 350 km away from Mumbai, the state capital, the news outlets reported.
As reported by the local media, the minibus was transporting 35 passengers, primarily employees of a garment factory, on their way to work in Mumbai. Tragically, the container truck, traveling in the opposite direction, collided with the minibus head-on.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the minibus was crushed and some of the passengers were trapped inside. The truck driver also sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and extricated the victims from the wreckage. The injured were shifted to various hospitals in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai for treatment.
The police have registered a case of rash driving and negligence against the truck driver and are investigating the cause of the accident.
