Microsoft Inc. on Monday announced its multi-year, multi-billion investment in OpenAI, creator of the GPT-3 large language artificial intelligence model (LLM) and the ChatGPT.
Microsoft has not announced today the investment amount for a multi-year project, rather the company is saying that it is a “multi-billion dollar” investment. But, several media reports have estimated the figure at $ 10 billion, citing sources familiar with both of parties.
“We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, of Microsoft. “In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications.”
“The past three years of our partnership have been great,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “Microsoft shares our values and we are excited to continue our independent research and work toward creating advanced AI that benefits everyone.”
According to OpenAI, this multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment from Microsoft follows their previous investments in 2019 and 2021, and will allow them to continue their independent research and develop AI that is increasingly safe, useful, and powerful.
