Meta Platforms, Inc., the company formerly known as Facebook, is working on a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that could rival the most advanced ChatGPT AI model developed by OpenAI, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The new AI system is expected to be as powerful as ChatGPT, which can generate coherent and realistic texts on various topics and tasks. The new AI model is aimed at helping other companies to create networks that perform complicated text and analytic tasks, such as summarizing documents, answering questions, or generating content.
According to the report, Meta is currently building new data centers to support the new AI model, as well as buying more H100 chips from Nvidia Corp., which are designed for high-performance computing and AI applications. The new AI model is expected to be ready by next year and to be many times more powerful than Meta’s previous AI model, Llama 2, which was launched in 2021.
Meta rebranded itself from Facebook in October 2021 as part of its push into the so-called metaverse, which is a virtual reality environment where people can interact with each other and digital content. Meta’s products include social media platforms Facebook and Instagram (banned in Russia), as well as messaging app WhatsApp.
