Social networking Meta announced Tuesday they will reinstate former president Donald Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram with new guardrails.

“We will be ending the suspension of Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks,” Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said in a statement. “We’ve put new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses”, he added.

In the event that Mr. Trump posts further violating content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation, Clegg said.

Wednesday, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement after Meta announced they will reinstate former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts:

“This is a dangerous decision. Reinstating former President Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts will only fan the flames of hatred and division that led to an insurrection. Meta has had ‘guardrails’ in place that have been repeatedly ignored for high-profile accounts. After years of broken promises, I, unfortunately, do not expect this time to be any different. The Capitol community is still picking up the pieces from the January 6th insurrection that Trump ignited, and now he is returning to the virtual scene of the crime. The reinstatement of Trump’s accounts shows that there is no low Mark Zuckerberg will not stoop to in order to reverse Meta’s cratering revenue and stagnant consumer growth, even if it means damaging our democracy.”
