Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, 69, has been jailed for 12 years in a corruption case. The High Court dismissed his appeal.

Najib was taken to Kajang prison on the outskirts of Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur following the verdict.

The court convicted him in July 2020 of embezzling funds from the state-owned health fund  1MDB. Najib was released on bail after an appeal. He demanded delay in execution of the order against him.

He was found guilty of seven different charges. At the center of the case was an amount of 42 million ringgit. which was sent from SRC International to his personal account. SRC was the predecessor unit of 1MDB.

The court sentenced 12 years in prison and a fine of 210 million ringgit in the case. His lawyers claimed that they had been led to believe that the money sent to the private account was not from government funds, but a donation from the Saudi royal family.
