MacKenzie Scott, one of the richest women in the world announced Tuesday that she and her husband Dan Jewett had given away $2.74 billion to 286 organizations including arts nonprofits and groups working to combat racial discrimination.
MacKenzie Scott is an American novelist, philanthropist, and the former wife of Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos. As of May 29, 2021, she has a net worth of US$57.7 billion, making her the third-wealthiest woman in the world, and the 22nd-wealthiest individual overall.
For Scott, she is fulfilling the commitment she made in 2019 to give away a portion of the fortune she made when she divorced her husband, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world.
The gifts were made in the name of the MacKenzie Scott Foundation, Scott and her husband Dan Jewett, who she married earlier this year.
“Because community-centered service is such a powerful catalyst and multiplier, we spent the first quarter of 2021 identifying and evaluating equity-oriented non-profit teams working in areas that have been neglected. The result was $2,739,000,000 in gifts to 286 high-impact organizations in categories and communities that have been historically underfunded and overlooked,” Scott wrote in her blog post.
This most recent donation brings her givings to more than $8.5 billion worth of donations in less than a year.
Scott donated over $4.1 billion in the last four months last year to 384 organizations.
Though Ms. Scott did not list the amount she gave each organization, her blog post included a list of 286 organizations she donated to most recently, which are “high-impact organizations in categories and communities that have been historically underfunded and overlooked,” she said.
