Liz Truss, the leader of the Conservative Party, will become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Truss, who is now the Foreign Minister, won the election for the leadership of the Conservative Party, and she will become the new Prime Minister of Britain.
Truss defeated former finance minister Rishi Sunak and was elected party leader, and she will be the next Prime Minister.
Rishi Sunak, another competitor of Indian origin, was defeated in the election results announced on Monday afternoon. Truss got 81 thousand 326 votes while Sunak got 60 thousand 399 votes.
With this victory, the 47-year-old Truss became the third British woman to become Prime Minister. Earlier, Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May became Prime Ministers of Great Britain.
The Conservatives have a single majority in Britain’s lower house of parliament. The leader of the Conservative Party will become the Prime Minister because of the majority in the Parliament.
“I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential, ” Truss twitted after the victory.
The then Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned last June, facing a moral crisis after his own cabinet ministers resigned.
Before the fall of Johnson’s government, the then finance minister Sunak was the first to resign.
