In a significant development for Latvia’s political landscape, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš has officially confirmed his resignation. This move, as dictated by the constitution, triggers the dissolution of his cabinet. The announcement comes amid efforts to pave the way for a stronger government that can enact crucial reforms, bolster prosperity, and stimulate economic growth.

Taking to Twitter to share his decision, Prime Minister Kariņš emphasized the necessity of a new, robust government to continue working for the country’s future. He stated, “So that a new, strong government can be formed as soon as possible to implement important changes, improve prosperity and economic growth – today, while meeting with @edgarsrinkevics, I submitted the resignation letter of the government. Work for the future of our country must continue immediately!”

The decision to step down follows a breakdown in the coalition government, prompted by internal disputes among the governing parties. Despite the cabinet’s resignation, the administration will remain operational on a temporary basis until the incoming government is sworn in.

President Edgars Rinkēvičs, responsible for appointing the next prime minister, announced his intention to commence consultations with all parliamentary parties in the upcoming week. A key directive for the incoming government is to establish an ambitious goal of achieving the average welfare level of the European Union by the year 2030.

Krišjānis Kariņš, who previously led a three-party coalition consisting of the New Unity (Jaunā Vienotība) party, the National Alliance, and the United List, faced a setback when he attempted to include left-leaning opposition parties within the alliance, against the wishes of his coalition partners. This ultimately led to the coalition’s dissolution.

The New Unity party has put forth the nomination of former welfare minister Evika Siliņa as a potential successor to Prime Minister Kariņš. Kariņš, a US-born leader who has held office since 2019, made it clear on Monday that he does not intend to lead the next government.

As Latvia navigates this period of political transition, the focus remains on establishing a cohesive and forward-looking government that can steer the nation toward greater prosperity and effectively address both domestic and international challenges.
