The tragic incident involving Prakriti Lamsal, a bright student from Nepal, has shaken the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) community. Here are the five key points:
- The Incident: Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old from Nepal’s Kathmandu, was pursuing computer science at KIIT in Odisha. She was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday, hours after speaking to her mother. Prakriti’s friends and family have accused a 21-year-old male student of physical and verbal abuse, leading to his arrest.
- Campus Protests: The tragic event has led to widespread protests by Nepali students on the KIIT campus. Over 500 Nepali students were reportedly forced to leave the campus and were dropped off at Cuttack railway station. The Nepal Embassy intervened, and the Odisha government has since formed a high-level committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Prakriti’s death and the university’s handling of the protests.
- College Behavior: The response of the KIIT college staff towards Nepali students has been highly criticized. Initially, students were forcibly removed from the campus, leading to clashes with university authorities. Following the protests and intervention by the Nepal Embassy, KIIT college issued several statements, apologizing for the mishandling of the situation. The college administration has committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of all students, including Nepali students. They have now asked the expelled students to return and have assured them of their security on campus.
- Legal Proceedings: The Odisha police have detained a male student, Advik Srivastava, for questioning in connection with Prakriti’s death. An FIR has been filed, including charges related to abetment to suicide. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are working to ensure that justice is served. Additionally, six individuals, including three directors and two security guards, have been arrested in connection with the case.
- College Announcement: The KIIT family expresses its deepest condolences to the grieving family of late Prakriti Lamsal, a bright student from Nepal whose untimely demise has left us all heartbroken. Prof. Achyuta Samanta met her father and uncle and assured them that Prakriti’s dreams will live on. To honour her memory, and in accordance with her father’s wish, KIIT will introduce a special scholarship for Nepali students in her name. This initiative will ensure that many more talented students like Prakriti have the opportunity to pursue their education without hurdles. Prof. Samanta also met with the Counselors, Embassy of Nepal, and spoke on call with the Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs and Minister of Home Affairs of Nepal, briefing them on the actions taken in this matter.
