Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party secured victory in parliamentary elections but failed to get the majority in Monday’s parliamentary election, media outlets projected.

Trudeau’s Liberal party will need to work with the other parties in order to govern and pass the legislations he promised voters during the campaign.

With nearly 95% of polls across the country reporting, Trudeau’s Liberal party were leading or secured in 157 seats – but 13 short of the 170 needed to form a majority government in the House of Commons.

The Conservatives were leading or secured in 121 seats.

The remaining seats in the next Parliament will be held by the left-leaning New Democratic Party and the Quebec-based separatist party Bloc Quebecois.

Trudeau called the snap elections last month to get a new mandate and better hold on power that would eliminate his reliance on opposition parties to pass his policies.

He faced criticism from opposition parties and critics over recent weeks for calling the election in the midst of the fourth wave of COVID-19.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed what he called ‘clear mandate’ in the snap polls for his government to go through the Covid pandemic.

“You are sending us back to work with a clear mandate to get Canada through this pandemic and to the brighter days ahead. My friends, that’s exactly what we are ready to do,” Trudeau told supporters from Montreal early Tuesday.

“What we’ve seen tonight is that millions of Canadians have chosen a progressive plan. Some have talked about division but that’s not what I see. That’s not what I’ve seen these past weeks across the country.”

He thanked Canadian for casting vote and putting trust in his Liberal party.

“We’re going to finish the fight against COVID. And we’re going to move Canada forward, “ he said in a tweet.

Although voting has ended, final results may not be known until Tuesday morning due to the close contest and large number of mail-in ballots , media outlets reported.
