British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called a virtual G7 leaders’ meeting for Tuesday to discuss the crisis in Afghanistan and urged governments to find ways to prevent conditions from getting worse.

“I will ask our friends and allies to stand by the Afghan people and step up support for refugees and humanitarian aid, “ Johnson said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Earlier, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement that US President Joe Biden will meet virtually with the leaders of the G7 on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, including humanitarian assistance for Afghan refugees.

“It is vital that the international community works together to ensure safe evacuations, prevent a humanitarian crisis and support the Afghan people to secure the gains of the last 20 years,” Johnson said on Twitter on Sunday.

This year, the UK has taken on the Presidency of the G7 (Group of 7). G7 nations comprise the US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, Italy and Japan.
