Japan will temporarily ban new entry into the country of nonresident foreign nationals from around the world effective from Monday to prevent the spread of the more contagious coronavirus variant, the government announced on Saturday.
The government has decided to take the measure as the variant, first detected in Britain, is spreading in several countries.
The ban will be in effect until the end of January. Only Japanese nationals and foreigners living in Japan will be permitted to return to the country, the Nikkei news service reported.
Japanese citizens and foreign residents will be allowed to enter but must show proof of a negative coronavirus test 72 hours before departing for Japan and must quarantine for two weeks after arrival, the government said in an emailed statement to the local Japanese media.
