In a shocking development, Ramesh Karki, an associate professor of mathematics at Indiana University, found himself entangled in the web of a statewide human trafficking crackdown known as “Operation Buyer’s Remorse.” The operation, led by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, resulted in the arrest of 160 individuals, including Karki, who was taken into custody on September 27, 2023, in Dayton, Ohio.

Karki, 44 years old, was booked into jail on a soliciting charge. While the specific details of his alleged involvement were not disclosed, Yost stated that the arrests were made concerning individuals seeking or engaging in prostitution.

The operation, which unfolded from September 25 to September 30, 2023, involved a comprehensive effort to combat human trafficking across Ohio. Law enforcement officials conducted coordinated stings, and the crackdown targeted individuals exploiting young victims. Notably, those arrested came from various backgrounds, including teachers, nurses, retirees, former law enforcement officers, and more.

Over the course of the operation, a total of 149 “johns” seeking to buy sex were arrested and charged with engaging in prostitution. Additionally, two individuals were apprehended for attempting to engage in sexual activities with minors, and six were arrested for promoting prostitution. Further arrests included charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and narcotics, as well as outstanding warrants.

This operation was not only about arrests but also aimed to support survivors of human trafficking, with law enforcement officers interviewing 104 survivors and providing them with necessary resources.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost applauded the joint effort of nearly 100 law enforcement agencies and service organizations involved in Operation Buyer’s Remorse. He emphasized that their actions aimed to curb the demand that fuels human trafficking and expressed gratitude for their dedication to the cause.

Ramesh Karki, who holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Toledo, was among those taken into custody during this high-profile operation. His arrest has sent shockwaves through the academic community and serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of human trafficking.

Karki was reportedly released on bond following his arrest, adding another layer of complexity to this ongoing investigation. As authorities continue to work tirelessly in the fight against human trafficking, this case has underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to combat this heinous crime.
