Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the stand on Tuesday in his ongoing corruption trial, firmly rejecting all accusations against him. “These are total lies,” Netanyahu said in court, defending his integrity and work ethic. “I work 17, 18 hours a day. Everyone who knows me knows this.”

    Allegations and Netanyahu’s Defense

Netanyahu, 75, faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. The accusations include accepting luxury gifts from wealthy benefactors and leveraging his office for personal gain. However, the prime minister refuted claims of indulgence in luxury.

“I hate champagne. I can’t drink it,” he said, adding that cigars were only smoked occasionally during meetings. “I eat my meals at my work table—it’s not cordon bleu,” Netanyahu remarked, emphasizing his modest lifestyle.

    Leading Amidst Dual Responsibilities

Testifying in Tel Aviv District Court, which was relocated for security reasons due to the ongoing Gaza war, Netanyahu highlighted his dual responsibilities.

“I am leading the country through a seven-front war. I think the two can be done in parallel,” he said, pointing to the demands of his role as the country’s leader while facing a legal battle.

    Background of the Case

The trial stems from allegations dating back to 2019, which include Netanyahu granting favors to media tycoons and receiving gifts like expensive cigars, champagne, and jewelry. The prime minister is accused of using his position to secure favorable media coverage and other benefits.

Netanyahu has denied all charges, describing the investigations as politically motivated. “This is not a legal inquiry; it’s a coup with rabid political motivations,” he argued in court.

    Political and Legal Implications

Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving leader, is the first sitting prime minister to face criminal charges. A conviction could force him to resign, potentially destabilizing Israel’s political landscape.

While the trial continues, the outcome remains uncertain. However, it is clear that this case will have far-reaching implications for Netanyahu’s political career and Israel’s legal and political systems.
