Militants from the Islamic State group (ISIS) attacked an army barracks in a mountainous area north of Baghdad on Thursday, killing 11 soldiers as they slept, the AP news agency reports quoting Iraqi security officials as saying.
The attack occurred in the Al-Azim district, an open area north of Baqouba in Diyala province, according to the report.
The circumstances of the attack were not immediately clear, but Islamic State group militants broke into the barracks at 3 a.m. local time and shot dead the soldiers, two officials told AP news agency.
Over the past months, IS militants have intensified their attacks against Iraqi security forces in the provinces which the militants had previously controlled, leaving dozens dead and wounded.
