Iraqi forces have captured the alleged finance chief of the Islamic State (ISIS) group, Sami Jasim al-Jaburi in Turkey, Iraqi authority said on Monday.
According to Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, Sami Jasim, who was in charge of the armed group’s finances and a deputy of slain leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was arrested outside of the country.
Al-Kadhimi announced Sami’s arrest on social media.
“While our ISF heroes focused on securing the elections, their INIS colleagues were conducting a complex external operation to capture Sami Jasim, who was in charge of Daesh finance, and a deputy of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi,” al-Kadhimi tweeted, using an alternative name for the terror group.
Details around Jaburi’s arrest aren’t clear.
Jaburi is a senior member of ISIS who was sought by the United States.
In September 2015, the US Treasury Department labeled Jaburi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
The US had offered a reward of up to $5 million for the capture of Jaburi.
The US Rewards for Justice program said Jaburi had “reportedly served as the equivalent of… finance minister (for ISIS), supervising the group’s revenue-generating operations from illicit sales of oil, gas, antiquities and minerals”.
