The Indian Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal Twitter account was “very briefly compromised”.
“The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured. In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored,” the office said on Twitter.

A social media post shared by the Indian Prime Minister the PM’s account while it was breached declared that “India has officially adopted Bitcoin as [its] legal tender”.
“The government has bought 500 BTC (Bitcoins) and is distributing them to all residents of the country”, said the social media post, which has now been deleted.
The screenshot of the now-deleted Twitter post has since been shared widely on Indian social media, with many Indian users expressing concern about the cybersecurity of the prime minister’s account.
The matter was immediately shared with Twitter and the personal handle of PM Narendra Modi was secured.
A Twitter spokesperson, in an emailed statement to Reuters, said, “Twitter took the necessary steps to secure the compromised account as soon as it became aware of the activity.”
The spokesperson also added that an investigation has revealed that no signs of any other impacted accounts at present.
