Two COVID-19 cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in India, local media reported quoting the health official saying on Thursday.

The cases were reported in the southwestern state of Karnataka, the outlets reported.

“Two cases of Omicron variant have been reported in the country so far. Both cases are from Karnataka,” Xinhua news agency reported quoting Lav Agarwal, a senior health ministry official saying at a press briefing.

Agarwal said all contacts of the two patients, both males aged 66 and 46, have been traced.

Officials said strict measures for international travelers have been implemented to check the spread of the new coronavirus strain.
