India has taken a bold step to address climate change and strive for net-zero emissions by launching the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) at the G20 Summit on Saturday. The GBA is a new initiative that aims to boost the use of cleaner fuels derived from biomass, such as ethanol and biodiesel, across various sectors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who unveiled the GBA, urged world leaders to join this initiative and collaborate in the field of fuel blending. He said that biofuels can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, create jobs, and improve rural livelihoods. He also announced that India has advanced its target of achieving 20% ethanol blending in petrol and 5% biodiesel blending in diesel by 2025.
“Today, the need of the hour is that all countries should work together in the field of fuel blending. Our proposal is to take an initiative at a global level to increase ethanol blending in petrol up to 20 percent,” Modi said.
India, which has committed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070, is actively expanding the use of biofuels in its transportation sector. Biofuels are sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels that can be produced from agricultural and organic materials, such as sugarcane, corn, jatropha, algae, and waste.
Modi also highlighted India’s progress in renewable energy, stating that India stands among the countries where a large-scale solar revolution is underway. He said that millions of Indian farmers have embraced natural farming, which reduces the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
In addition to the GBA, Modi announced India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission to boost green hydrogen production and create a Global Hydrogen Ecosystem during its G20 Presidency. Green hydrogen is a clean fuel that can be produced from water using renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind.
Furthermore, Modi proposed the launch of the G20 Satellite Mission for Environment and Climate Observation. This initiative aims to provide climate and weather data to all countries, especially those in the Global South, to support informed decision-making in climate-related matters.
The launch of the Global Biofuel Alliance and India’s proactive stance on environmental issues underscore the nation’s commitment to addressing climate change on a global scale.
