U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has expressed her country’s commitment not to leave Taiwan. Ignoring China’s warning and coming here last night, she said that America cannot give up its commitment to Taiwan in today’s meeting with Taiwanese leaders.

In her meeting with President Tsai Ing-Wen, she said that the world is facing a situation where it has to choose between democracy and autocracy.

President Tsai thanked Speaker Pelosi for her visit to Taiwan. She commented that the military exercises from mainland China after Speaker Pelosi landed in Taipei were an unnecessary response.

Later, after meeting with President Tsai, Pelosi said: “The story of Taiwan is an inspiration to all freedom-loving people.”

“Now more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial, and that is the message we’re bringing today,” she said.

Pelosi is the highest American official to visit Taiwan in a gap of 25 years, at a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and China.

China has said that if it considers Taiwan as its territory, it can reclaim the island using force if necessary. The U.S. has also been following the ‘One China’ policy. The U.S. also recognized Beijing as the government of China. In addition, the U.S. has maintained informal defense ties with Taiwan and other countries.
