Washington D.C (GNB)- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House could vote to raise those payments on Thursday if House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy agreed to do so.

Pelosi on Tuesday night responded to Trump on Twitter. “Mr. President, sign the bill to keep the government open! Urge McConnell and McCarthy to agree with the Democratic unanimous consent request for $2,000 direct payments! This can be done by noon on Christmas Eve!”

In a video posted to Twitter on Tuesday, the president called the current bill “a disgrace, the bill they are now planning to send back to my desk is much different than anticipated.”

President Donald Trump said that the U.S. Congress should amend the coronavirus relief bill to increase the amount of stimulus checks. He also said to eliminate wasteful proposed spending, among other issues.

The bill passed by the congress provides a $600 payment to most Americans, but Trump said he is asking Congress to amend the bill and “increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2,000, or $4,000 for a couple. I am also asking Congress to get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation and to send me a suitable bill.”
