Neeri KFT, a traditional Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation from India, has been shown to be effective in regulating the functions of at least six gene variants that cause kidney dysfunction, researchers said ahead of World Kidney Day on March 9.

Although the herbal drug manufactured by AIMIL Pharma is already known for its therapeutic properties, researchers at the Jamia Hamdard Center of Excellence (CoE) conducted a study for the first time to investigate the drug’s nephroprotective effects against genes associated with renal dysfunction. There are silico, in vitro and in vivo approaches.

The results were encouraging in all categories.

The researchers explained that six genes (CASP, IEL, AKT, ACE-2, AGTR-1 and SOD-1) are responsible for regulating kidney function. In other words, the proteins associated with these genes help ensure the health of this vital organ. Any variation in these molecules can complicate or damage kidney structure.

The study revealed that compounds such as gallic acid, caffeic acid and ferulic acid were the main components of Neeri KFT, while a network pharmacological analysis indicated a strong interaction between polyphenols and genes involved in the pathophysiology of kidney diseases.

Similarly, the in vivo study showed a significant enhancing effect of the herbal medicinal product on biochemical markers and antioxidant enzymes and regulated inflammatory cytokine expression in renal tissue.

Sanchit Sharma of AIMIL Pharma noted that the herbal formulation was developed based on proven phyto-ingredients from extracts of medicinal plants such as Punarnava, Giloy, Gokhru, Palash and Varuna after intensive scientific research.

The study, published in the journal Biomedicines, offers a glimmer of hope to several patients with kidney disease, which is on the rise both nationally and globally.

In fact, the first phase of a pan-Indian study conducted by the Indian Society of Nephrology found that at least 30 percent of people with diabetes and high blood pressure have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, a condition that rarely presents with symptoms. and leads to gradual kidney failure.
