Hawaii Gov. David Ige declared a state of emergency for the entire state Monday afternoon as heavy rains from a Kona Low weather system are anticipated to continue to cause flooding and damage to public and private property.
Governor Ige urged residents to prepare for major flooding, landslides, road closures, and damage to homes.
In a statement posted to Twitter on Monday, Gov. David Ige said he signed the emergency declaration as heavy rains from a “Kona low,” a type of seasonal cyclone in the Hawaiian Islands, were expected to “continue to cause flooding and damage” across the state.
“The emergency declaration allows the state to use funds to support state and county efforts in providing quick and efficient relief of suffering, damage, and losses caused by flooding and other effects of heavy rains,” Gov. David Ige said.
Governor Ige said the emergency relief period continues through Friday, Dec. 10.
