The former two-term president and the 44th President of the United States Barack Obama turned 60 on Wednesday, August 4.
Happy Birthday President Barack Obama!
The birthday planned for former President Barack Obama on Martha’s Vineyard is being scaled back due to concerns about the delta variant, Hannah Hankins, a spokeswoman for the Obamas said.
The party planning had been in the works for months, but now it will now be a smaller gathering with family and friends.
“This outdoor event was planned months ago in accordance with all public health guidelines and with COVID safeguards in place. Due to the new spread of the delta variant over the past week, the president and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends,” spokeswoman Hankins said.
“President Obama is appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon,” Hankins said.
Barack Obama was the 44th president of the United States and the first African American commander-in-chief. He served two terms, in 2008 and 2012. He graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Harvard Law Review.
After serving on the Illinois State Senate, he was elected a U.S. senator representing Illinois in 2004. He and his wife Michelle Obama have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
