Google’s parent company Alphabet is cutting approximately 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, the company said Friday.

“We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles, ” Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said in an email to employees Friday .

In an email to employees, Pichai said the company saw dramatic growth over the past two years and hired new employees “for a different economic reality than the one we face today.” He said he takes full responsibility for the decisions that led to where the company is today.

Pichai said that the company has undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that workers and roles are aligned with the highest priorities as the company.

“The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions, ” CEO Pichai said.

In the email, Pichai said the company already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices, he added.

Google’s decision comes the same week other big tech companies, Meta Platforms Inc. – the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, Twitter Inc., Microsoft and Amazon, announced they were laying off thousands of employees.
