In a world where people are living longer, gaining higher levels of education, and becoming more digitally connected than ever before, a new United Nations report reveals a paradox that is difficult to ignore: many believe life today is worse than it was fifty years ago.
The World Social Report 2025, launched Thursday, delivers a sobering assessment of global sentiment. Despite remarkable human progress, nearly 60 percent of respondents reported that they are “struggling,” while an additional 12 percent described themselves as “suffering.” The widespread feeling of disillusionment, the report notes, points to a deep lack of confidence in the future.
“Even as material conditions improve, people’s perceptions of their quality of life are deteriorating,” the report concludes.
A Stark Paradox
The findings highlight a troubling paradox: while humanity enjoys unprecedented advances in healthcare, technology, and education, these gains have not translated into greater happiness or security. Instead, anxiety, inequality, and mistrust in institutions are casting long shadows over global societies.
Economic disparities, political instability, climate change fears, and the erosion of social cohesion are among the major forces driving this pessimism. Many, particularly younger generations, question whether the future holds opportunities for better living conditions than previous generations experienced.
Urgent Call for Action
In response, the United Nations is urging the international community to forge a “new policy consensus”—one that goes beyond measuring success through GDP growth and focuses on human well-being, equity, and sustainability.
Key recommendations from the report include:
- Expanding social protection programs,
- Reducing inequalities in wealth and opportunity,
- Strengthening public trust in institutions,
- And prioritizing policies that promote social inclusion and democratic participation.
“True progress must center on the lived realities of people,” the report stresses. “Without addressing emotional, social, and economic insecurities, material gains will continue to ring hollow.”
A Turning Point for Global Development
The World Social Report 2025 serves as a wake-up call: without urgent and collective action, rising dissatisfaction could weaken the foundations of democratic societies and fuel further divisions at a time when unity is critical to addressing global challenges.
As the world grapples with rapid technological shifts, environmental crises, and evolving political landscapes, the report urges leaders to reimagine progress—not just in terms of numbers, but in the quality of life, dignity, and shared hope for all.
