At a summit in South Africa, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is urging international law compliance in light of the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arrest. “At this point, international law is clear,” Baerbock said.
Following a meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in Wismar, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Green politician stated that “International law makes it clear: war criminals, those responsible for waging aggressive wars, will eventually be held accountable.”
Putin could go to a summit of the BRICS gathering of states in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August. According to the South African government, invitations to the summit on August 22–24 had been sent to all five BRICS members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Because the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Putin in March, the meeting is especially explosive. Upon entry, the Russian president would be required to be arrested by South Africa, which has signed the ICC statutes. Up to this point, South Africa has not offered a reasonable expression about the technique should Putin really show up.
Baerbock stated, “The BRICS meeting makes it clear that every aggressor and war criminal faces consequences for a brutal war of aggression and a breach of the international order.” Then, at that point, it would never again be so natural to participate in global gatherings”. South Africa’s membership in the ICC has already been made abundantly clear. The German Foreign Minister stated, “That makes it even clearer that this Russian war of aggression is not just a European matter, but that it affects the whole world.”
