Former US President Jimmy Carter, 98, who led the nation from 1977 to 1981, has expressed his desire to spend his “remaining time” living at home with his family and receiving ‘hospice care’, his non-profit foundation said in a statement on Saturday. is
Hospice care focuses on end-of-life care, comfort, and quality of life for a terminally ill person. At some point, treatment of a serious illness may not be possible, or the patient may refuse certain treatments and choose ‘home care’.
Carter, the oldest living former president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, lives in Plains, Georgia with his wife, Rosalyn.
It is the township where he was born and worked as a peanut farmer before becoming governor and later running for the US presidency as a Democratic candidate.
“After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention,” the Carter Center said in a statement posted to Twitter.
On July 7, 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith of Plains. When his father died in 1953, he resigned his naval commission and returned with his family to Georgia. He took over the Carter farms, and he and Rosalynn operated Carter’s Warehouse, a general-purpose seed and farm supply company in Plains. He quickly became a leader of the community, serving on county boards supervising education, the hospital authority, and the library. In 1962 he won election to the Georgia Senate. He lost his first gubernatorial campaign in 1966, but won the next election, becoming Georgia’s 76th governor on January 12, 1971. He was the Democratic National Committee campaign chairman for the 1974 congressional and gubernatorial elections.
During his presidency, Carter placed a commitment on human rights and social justice, enjoying a strong first two years which included brokering a peace deal between Israel and Egypt dubbed the Camp David Accords.
In November of that year, he was defeated in the US presidential election by Republican rival Ronald Reagan.
He founded the Carter Center in 1982 to pursue his vision of world diplomacy, and he was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless efforts to promote social and economic justice.
“The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers,” the Carter Center said.
“He has the full support of his family and his medical team,” it added.
