In a recent interview with CNN’s “State of the Union,” former Vice President and Republican Presidential Candidate Mike Pence expressed his belief that former President Donald Trump’s words and actions leading up to the Capitol attacks on January 6, 2021, were reckless, but he remains unconvinced that they were criminal. Pence’s remarks come amid the ongoing investigations into the events surrounding the Capitol riots.

In a separate development, it was revealed that Trump received a letter stating he is a target of a grand jury investigation related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. This marks the clearest indication yet that Trump, who is considered the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, may face federal criminal charges concerning his attempts to retain power after losing to Democrat Joe Biden.

Regarding the potential indictment, Pence expressed his hope that it does not come to that, stating that the decision should be left to the American public to determine Trump’s responsibility. Pence also acknowledged that Trump’s actions were reckless and disagreed with the former president’s belief that he could overturn the election outcome, which had resulted in some rioters chanting “hang Mike Pence” during the Capitol riots.

Amidst the investigations, Trump was previously indicted in June for unlawfully retaining national security documents and lying to officials who sought to recover them, to which he pleaded not guilty. Recently, he faced additional charges of falsifying business records to conceal a payment to a porn star. The developments surrounding Trump’s legal situation continue to be closely watched by the public and political observers.
