    ‘Father of Pak’s nuclear bomb’ Abdul Qadeer Khan passes away at 85

    Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, a renowned nuclear scientist passed away in Islamabad, Pakistan on Sunday morning. He was 85.

    Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, an atomic scientist regarded as “the ‘father of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb” under the clandestine enrichment program and was infamous for his controversial role in nuclear proliferation.

    Born in 1936 in Bhopal, India, Dr. Khan immigrated along with his family to Pakistan in 1947 after the partition of the subcontinent.

    In 1967, Khan obtained an engineer’s degree from a university in the Netherlands and later joined the doctoral program in metallurgical engineering at a university in Belgium.

    He became a national hero as well as in the Islamic world, when in May 1998 Pakistan conducted its nuclear tests.

    Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan was the first Pakistani to receive three presidential awards including Hilal-e-Imtiaz.

    According to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan, Khan had been admitted to the KRL Hospital on August 26 after he tested positive for Covid-19. Later, he was shifted to a military hospital in Rawalpindi but was discharged after recovering from the virus.

    Khan was brought to the KRL Hospital early in the morning after he faced difficulty in breathing, Geo News reported.

    Doctors said Khan’s health deteriorated after bleeding in his lungs. He could not survive after his lungs collapsed.

    Prime Minister Imran Khan said, “He was loved by our nation because of his critical contribution in making us a nuclear weapon state.”

    Thousands of people gathered at Faisal Mosque for the Funeral Prayers of Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan on Monday.
