    Fairfax County students score above national average on SAT, Asian students on top

    The school system in Fairfax County, Virginia, said on Wednesday that the SAT scores in the 2021 class were higher than the national average, and said that compared with last year, the number of students taking the SAT was slightly lower.

    The Fairfax County, Virginia, said on Wednesday that the Class of 2021 in Fairfax County continued to perform well above state and global averages on the SAT, according to results recently released by the College Board.

    The school system stated that Fairfax County’s overall average score was 1201, which exceeded the state average of 1,151 and the global average of 1,060.

    All scores are based on the public report of the University Council as of September 15, 2020.

    According to FCPS data, these numbers show racial differences, with Asian students having the highest average score at 1294, followed by white students at 1220. Hispanic students have an average score of 1095, and black students have the lowest average score of 1054.

    The school system stated that Fairfax County’s overall average score was 1201 which surpassed both the state average of 1151 and the global average of 1060.

    According to FCPS data, these numbers show racial differences, with Asian students having the highest average score at 1294, followed by white students at 1220. Hispanic students have an average score of 1095, and black students have the lowest average score of 1054.

    Evidence-Based Reading and Writing was 601 and Mathematics was 600 in Fairfax County likewise posted above the state and global averages, as shown in the table below.

    The pandemic had a major impact on SAT participation worldwide, due to COVID-related exam cancelations, combined with family reluctance to send their students in person for testing, the school system said. The College Board reported a 31.4% drop in SAT participation globally, with a 33.4%  drop in Virginia, it added.

    According to the school system, Fairfax County’s participation rates were substantially less affected, with a participation drop of only 4.4%, as FCPS offered SAT School Day for the first time in September 2020.

    The SAT School Day offered students the opportunity to take the SAT at no charge to them at their school on a designated weekday. As a result, 9,318 Fairfax County seniors took the SAT, representing 63% of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) senior class, the Fairfax county said.
