In response to the military coup that took place in Niger last week, both the European Union and the United States have issued a joint statement condemning the actions of the military junta and calling for an immediate halt to the coup. The leaders of the coup, who seized power claiming a deteriorating security situation and government inaction against jihadists, have been urged to step down and return President Mohamed Bazoum to office.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed full support for the measures taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which imposed sanctions on the coup leaders and gave them a one-week deadline to relinquish power or face the possibility of “the use of force.”

Borrell stated unequivocally that President Bazoum must be reinstated to power without any delay. Additionally, he rebuffed accusations of foreign interference and warned the military junta that it will be held accountable for any attacks on civilians or diplomatic personnel and facilities.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed the EU’s sentiments, praising ECOWAS’ strong leadership in defending constitutional order in Niger. The United States also joined in the calls for the immediate release of President Bazoum and the restoration of Niger’s democratically elected government.

In a separate statement aired on state television, the military junta accused former colonial ruler France of plotting to intervene militarily to free President Bazoum. However, the EU and the US have both emphasized a non-violent resolution and peaceful return to democratic governance.
