Elon Musk, the renowned CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has launched xAI, a new generative AI venture aimed at challenging OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. The company’s official websitestates that xAI’s objective is to understand the true nature of the universe.

xAI: Understand the UniversexAI is a new company founded by Elon Musk that sets out to Understand the Universe.x.ai

“Announcing formation of xAI to understand reality,” Musk wrote. Little is known about the project or its plans, unfortunately.

Musk, who previously served as a board member of OpenAI during its establishment in 2015, has enlisted the expertise of Dan Hendrycks, the director of the Center for AI Safety, to join xAI’s advisory team. The Center for AI Safety released an open letter in May, cautioning against the potential risks of uncontrolled AI development and emphasizing the necessity of global efforts to regulate the technology.

While Musk has been critical of ChatGPT and the direction taken by other companies in the field of generative AI, Reuters reports that xAI does not intend to explicitly program morality into its AI engine. Instead, the company aims to develop an AI system that comprehends the true essence of the universe, with a focus on ensuring its safety.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, xAI has already hired 11 AI engineers who have made significant contributions to notable innovations at organizations like DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto. Among the talented engineers are former employees of DeepMind, Microsoft, and Google, including Igor Babuschkin, Greg Yang, Tony Wu, and Christian Szegedy. These individuals have played key roles in groundbreaking advancements such as the AlphaStar gaming program, Google’s Minerva AI, OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, and GPT-4 large language models.

The company intends to expand its technical team by recruiting experienced engineers and researchers. xAI was incorporated in March as a distinct legal entity separate from Twitter, which Musk clarified has been renamed X Corp. However, Tesla and Twitter will collaborate closely with xAI in the development of the new generative AI engine, according to the company’s statement.

With Musk’s involvement and the expertise of talented engineers, xAI aims to make significant strides in generative AI and push the boundaries of understanding the universe through its advanced AI technology.
