An unknown gunman on Sunday attacked dozens of passengers while they were waiting to board a train, Nigeria’s southern state of Edo, according to Nigerian police.
The police in Edo State have confirmed that several passengers were abducted from a train station in the Igueben Local Government Area of the state.
Nigerian police said that they have launched a manhunt for unknown gunmen.
Chidi Nwabuzor, a spokesman for the police in Edo, told Xinhua via telephone that the police were yet to ascertain the exact number of kidnapped passengers at the Igueben train station Saturday evening, Xinhua reported quoting Chidi Nwabuzor, a spokesman for the police in Edo as saying. The gunmen gained entry into the terminal and began to shoot sporadically in the air as the passengers were waiting to be conveyed to Warri, a city in the neighboring Delta state.
“Some passengers were also injured but not taken away by the criminals,” Nwabuzor said, noting the gunmen quickly fled the scene, the news agency reported.
A manhunt has been launched by the police, with a view to rescuing the kidnapped passengers and apprehending the gunmen, said the police spokesman.
The Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, has closed down Ekehen Station in Edo State indefinitely after gunmen attacked the train station, reported local news outlets.
