(GNB Desk): The Senate on Saturday voted to acquit former President Donald Trump in his historic second impeachment trial, with 7 Republican senators joining 50 Democrats voting to convict, fewer than the 17 needed.
The Senate just voted to acquit former President Trump in his second impeachment trial. The vote was 57-43, with seven Republicans joining the Democrats. Senators needed a two-thirds majority to convict Trump.
These are the seven Republicans who voted to convict the former President:
- Richard Burr
- Bill Cassidy
- Susan Collins
- Lisa Murkowski
- Mitt Romney
- Ben Sasse
- Pat Toomey
Republican Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania all voted guilty.
The vote means the Senate cannot bar Trump from holding future federal offices.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, condemned 43 of his GOP colleagues for voting to acquit Trump for incitement of insurrection on Jan. 6.
Schumer said in remarks on the Senate floor that the case was “open and shut” because Trump told his “big lie” that the 2020 election was stolen and incited his supporters in response. He rejected the First Amendment argument Trump’s team of lawyers used to defend the former president.
“January 6 will live as a day of infamy in the history of the United States of America,” he said. “The failure to convict Donald Trump will live as a vote of infamy in the history of the United States Senate. The former president tried to overturn the results of a legitimate election and provoked an assault on our own government, and well over half the Senate Republican Conference decided to condone it.”
In a statement following the Senate vote to acquit him, Trump thanked his legal team and the senators who declared him not guilty of inciting the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6. Statement below:
