The death toll resulting from the catastrophic floods in Libya’s eastern city of Derna has surged to a staggering 5,300 lives lost, according to the country’s official news agency. According to the state news agency, the announcement was made by the Interior Ministry in East Libya, representing the government appointed by the House of Representatives.

Disturbingly, thousands of individuals are still unaccounted for in the wake of this unprecedented disaster. Mohamed Aboulmosha, the media official for the ministry, stated, “Local rescue teams are tirelessly working to locate and rescue those who remain missing.” Aboulmosha further emphasized the urgent need for international assistance in the ongoing rescue operations.

On Monday, Libya’s Presidency Council issued an appeal to friendly nations and international humanitarian organizations, urging them to provide aid to the regions severely affected by the catastrophic flooding in the eastern part of the country.

Aside from Derna, several other cities and towns, including Benghazi, Bayda, Al Marj, and Soussa, have also suffered extensive damage and loss of life due to the weekend catastrophe.

In response to this devastating crisis, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, the head of Libya’s Tripoli-based unity government, declared all areas affected by the deadly flooding as disaster zones. He additionally announced a period of three days of national mourning to honor the lives lost and provide support to the affected communities.

The situation remains dire, with rescue efforts ongoing and an urgent need for international intervention to assist the beleaguered communities in eastern Libya.
