The Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) on Monday left the coalition government led by CPN (Maoist Center) leader Push pa Kamal Dahl (Prachanda).
Eight CPN-UML ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel and Foreign Minister Bimala Rai Paudyal, resigned in line with the party’s decision.
The differences between the CPN-UML and the CPN (Maoist Center) deepened after the latter decided to support the Nepalese Congress in the presidential elections scheduled for March 9th.
Dahal became prime minister on December 25 last year. The support of 169 members of the House of Representatives, including 78 from the CPN-UML and other parties. The seven-party alliance collapsed after the CPN (Maoist Center) decided to support the Nepalese congressional candidate in the presidential elections.
CPN-UML and other parties in the alliance claimed that Dahal “betrayed” them by breaking a deal to support the CPN-UML presidential candidate. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party, which has 14 seats in the lower house, withdrew its support from the coalition government on Saturday.
