Interpol reported that on Thursday, a 63-year-old Italian convict who is thought to be connected to one of the most influential mafia groups in the country was detained in Saint-Etienne, France after fleeing for 16 years.

He was caught at a pizza place, where he was working as a chef. Edgardo Greco is wanted in Italy for several murders.

Edgardo Greco is believed to be a part of the highly feared Ndrangheta based in Calabria, Italy. According to French prosecutors, he had previously owned and operated an Italian eatery in the same city under a different name.

Interpol reported that Greco is wanted in Italy to serve a life sentence for the murders of Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo, and is also accused of trying to kill Emiliano Mosciaro in the middle of a feud between the Pino Sena and Perna Pranno gangs in the early 1990s.

Italian police stated that the brothers were killed with iron bars in a fish warehouse.

Edgardo Greco is also accused of the attempted murder of Emiliano Mosciaro. In 2006, Greco was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of two of his rivals, Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo.

Edgardo Greco is suspected of having links to the infamous Ndrangheta, an active mafia organization. This mafia is active in Calabria, Southern Italy. It is one of the most powerful organized syndicates in the world, active in crimes such as cocaine and arms smuggling.

Edgardo Greco escaped from prison after being sentenced. According to reports, till the year 2014, no input was received about him. In a very cunning way, he kept avoiding the eyes of Interpol by changing his disguise. During this, he worked in several restaurants. Later he started a restaurant himself.

He was hidden between pepperoni and dough for 16 years until he gained his trust. He appeared in a newspaper boasting of his traditional recipes. “He bragged about his pizzas, his ravioli, his risotto, and the tagliatelle,” says the BBC.
