In a surprising development, Chinese President Xi Jinping has taken the decision to sack Foreign Minister Qin Gang. The announcement was made after Qin Gang had not been seen in public for a month, raising questions about his absence and leading to speculation about his removal from office.

According to the Xinhua news agency, Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and member of the CCP Politburo, Wang Yi, has been re-appointed to the post of Foreign Minister. Wang Yi is a veteran diplomat with extensive experience in foreign affairs and has held various significant roles within the Chinese government.

The last known public appearance of Qin Gang was on June 25 when he participated in meetings with foreign ministers from Russia, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. Since then, his absence from public events had been a topic of discussion in the media, with the Chinese Communist Party remaining tight-lipped about the reasons behind his disappearance.

Wang Yi’s extensive diplomatic career began in 1982 when he joined the foreign ministry. Over the years, he served as the counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Japan, the deputy director general of the department of Asian Affairs, and the Chinese ambassador to Japan. He has also held crucial positions related to Taiwan affairs.

Between 2018 and the appointment of Qin Gang in 2022, Wang Yi had served as the State Councilor, member of the Leading CPC Members Group of the State Council, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The removal of Qin Gang and the re-appointment of Wang Yi may have significant implications for China’s foreign policy and international relations. As the world watches closely, China will likely see shifts in its approach to global affairs under Wang Yi’s leadership.
