The Canvas of Cultures: A Celebration of Art, Poetry, and Music event brought together diverse talents from various countries to celebrate the transformative and unifying power of creativity, including the artistic and poetic contributions from Nepal. Organised by the International Association of Art and Culture for Peace (IAACP), operating under the umbrella of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), the event highlighted how art, poetry, and music transcend cultural boundaries to inspire dialogue, empathy, and peace.

The programme featured Rhoslyn Singh, a talented 20-year-old artist from Nepal, whose work draws inspiration from her homeland while bridging British and European influences. Rhoslyn shared her artistic journey and highlighted her previous exhibitions in Nepal, Qatar, and the UK, where her depictions of Nepali women’s faces celebrated cultural heritage. Complementing her was Dr Rupak Shrestha, a poet from Nepal, who captivated the audience with verses deeply rooted in Nepal’s rich cultural traditions. He elaborated on how his poetry reflects both Nepali and British cultural elements and highlighted Nepal’s thriving literary landscape. Together, their contributions showcased Nepal’s vibrant artistic and literary heritage, resonating on a global stage.

Special guest Ian Pelham Turner, an international TV broadcaster, graced the event, while Duchess Nivin ElGamal of Lamberton, UPF UK Patron, delivered the welcome address. Robin Marsh, Secretary General of UPF UK, and Margaret Ali, Director of UPF UK, spoke about the role of art in fostering global understanding.

Chair of IAACP, Dr Sangita Swechcha, said: “This event takes us on a journey through the transformative power of art. We are privileged to hear from extraordinary individuals whose works transcend boundaries and speak to the universal values of peace, resilience, and unity.”

Other highlights included discussions with Amina Art Ansari, a British Pakistani artist with works in Windsor Castle’s Jubilee collection, and readings by poets Shahd Karaeen from Palestine, Nayeema Mahjoor from India, and Catherine Tuitt MBE. Musical performances by Italian opera singer Marisa Di Muro and oud player Saife Al-Naffak from Iraq added depth to the celebration.

British politics has long been admired for its high standards of transparency and accountability. Recently, it witnessed the resignation of Tulip Siddiq, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury, a prominent Labour Party leader, and a trailblazer in British public life. Her decision to step down highlights the ethical standards expected in the political landscape and her commitment to safeguarding public trust.

Who is Tulip Siddiq?

Tulip Siddiq is no stranger to the spotlight. She is the granddaughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of Bangladesh, and the niece of Sheikh Hasina, the recently ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Siddiq carved out her own path in politics, becoming a Member of Parliament for Hampstead and Kilburn in 2015.

With her education from prestigious institutions, including King’s College London, and her early win as a local councillor, Siddiq was seen as a rising star in British politics. Over the years, she held significant positions, including shadow ministerial roles, before being appointed as a cabinet minister following Labour’s electoral victory in 2024.

The Controversy That Led to Resignation

Siddiq’s political career faced turbulence due to allegations involving a London flat that was reportedly gifted to her. The controversy arose from connections linking the flat’s benefactor to her aunt, Sheikh Hasina. While Siddiq maintained that the property was purchased by her parents, the mere association with potential impropriety cast a shadow over her image.

Although investigations did not find her guilty of wrongdoing, the political culture in the UK demands an unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability. Any appearance of conflict of interest can erode public trust, and Siddiq’s case was no exception. Recognizing the potential distraction this could cause to the government’s functioning, she chose to resign from her ministerial position.

A Culture of Accountability in British Politics

Tulip Siddiq’s resignation reflects the high standards of integrity expected in British public life. In the UK, even the smallest infractions, such as attending a gathering during lockdown restrictions or failing to wear a seatbelt, have led to severe political consequences. Siddiq’s decision to step down aligns with this culture of prioritizing public confidence over personal defense.

In her resignation statement, Siddiq emphasized the importance of ensuring that government work remains undisturbed by controversies. “I do not wish to let these allegations, however unfounded, distract from the critical responsibilities entrusted to this government,” she stated.

What’s Next for Tulip Siddiq?

While her resignation marks a pause in her political journey, it is unlikely to overshadow her remarkable career. With her academic background, leadership skills, and international connections, Siddiq’s future remains bright, whether in public service or other fields.

A Lesson in Leadership

Tulip Siddiq’s story highlights the rigorous standards of British politics. Despite her family’s prominent role in Bangladesh’s history, she established her career independently in a foreign political landscape. Her resignation, driven by principles rather than compulsion, serves as a reminder that leadership often demands difficult choices.

In a world where politics can sometimes appear self-serving, Siddiq’s decision underscores the value of accountability and integrity. While this chapter in her political life may have closed, the lessons it imparts on ethical leadership are enduring.

In a surprise announcement, Catherine Elizabeth Middleton (Kate), the Princess of Wales, revealed on Friday that she has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

The 42-year-old royal had been absent from public events since Christmas, leading to speculation about her health. In January, Kensington Palace had assured the public that Kate underwent a successful, non-cancerous surgery for a stomach ailment and would be taking a break from royal duties until April.

However, in a video message released on Friday, Kate disclosed that tests conducted after the surgery found cancer. “It was a huge shock,” she said, “but I’m focusing on the things that will help me heal.”

The video showed the Princess walking with her husband, Prince William, near a farmhouse, suggesting a focus on privacy during her treatment.

This news comes after King Charles III, Kate’s father-in-law, also battled an undisclosed form of cancer earlier this year. He temporarily suspended public duties to ensure the continuity of constitutional functions.

The type of cancer Kate is battling and the specifics of her treatment plan have not been made public. Kensington Palace has emphasized the Princess’s right to medical privacy.

The public outpouring of support is expected to be significant, with many likely wishing Kate a full and speedy recovery.

In a shocking turn of events, Conservative MP Paul Bristow has been removed from his government post. The dismissal comes after Bristow publicly called for a ‘permanent ceasefire’ in Gaza, a move that has stirred controversy within the political landscape.

Paul Bristow, a Member of Parliament (MP), has reportedly made a statement that diverges from the stance of the Prime Minister on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Bristow stated, “The crimes of Hamas should not result in collective punishment of the people of Gaza,” calling for a cease-fire to prevent further harm. This statement has stirred controversy, as it breaks ranks with the Prime Minister’s position on the issue.

In a letter sent to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last week, Bristow had appealed to the PM for a ‘permanent cease-fire’ to rescue lives and facilitate the unobstructed delivery of humanitarian aid to those most in need. The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported this letter on Monday.

Bristow, known for his outspoken nature, made headlines when he advocated for an immediate halt to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. His stance, however, was met with resistance from within his own party, leading to his dismissal from his government role.

The decision to remove Bristow from his post has sparked a heated debate among political circles. Supporters of Bristow argue that his call for peace aligns with the principles of democracy and human rights. Critics, on the other hand, contend that Bristow’s public dissent undermines the government’s foreign policy strategy.

The Conservative Party has yet to announce a replacement for Bristow’s position. The incident has left many wondering about the future direction of the party and its stance on international conflicts.

As the story continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the political dynamics both within the Conservative Party and on the global stage.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow…

Judges in England and Wales have been instructed to postpone the sentencing of convicted criminals who are currently on bail, including rapists and burglars, because of the severe overcrowding in prisons, according to a report by the Times.

The guidance was issued by Lord Justice Edis, the senior presiding judge for England and Wales, on a private call with senior crown court judges earlier this month. He reportedly ordered or strongly encouraged judges not to send anyone to jail who appears before them from Monday, unless they are already in custody or pose an immediate risk to the public.

The move has raised concerns about the safety of victims and the public, as well as the credibility of the justice system. One senior judge told the Times that the “biggest concern” was defendants charged with historic rape or rape of a child under 13 and other sexual assault, as even if convicted they were now likely to remain on bail.

The prison population in England and Wales reached a record high of more than 88,000 last week, close to the capacity of 88,667. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) blames the coronavirus pandemic and last year’s barristers’ strike for the backlog of cases in the courts, which has increased the demand for prison places.

The MoJ has taken some measures to ease the pressure on the prison system, such as fast-tracking the refurbishment of empty cells, installing 1,000 rapid deployment cells in 18 jails across the country, and expanding the early release scheme for offenders serving under four years in jail who can be freed on electronic tags and subject to home curfews.

However, these measures have not been enough to prevent the crisis from escalating. The MoJ has also resorted to using 400 police cells to hold inmates as part of Operation Safeguard, an emergency plan that was last activated in 2007 when Tony Blair’s government ordered the early release of more than 1,500 prisoners before they had completed their sentences.

The MoJ has also said it would seek to rent prison cells in foreign countries to alleviate the squeeze in England and Wales, a move that has been criticised by human rights groups and prison reform campaigners.

The MoJ stresses that sentencing is a matter for the independent judiciary and that it is working hard to increase prison capacity and reduce the backlog. It also says that it is committed to protecting the public from serious offenders and ensuring that victims get justice.

However, some experts have questioned the government’s approach to criminal justice policy, which has been marked by a lurch to the right and a stream of announcements about tougher sentences for various offences. The president of the Prison Governors Association blamed the ministers for creating unrealistic expectations and failing to invest in alternatives to custody.

(With inputs from agencies)

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during a visit to Kiev on Thursday, the defense ministry said.

Shapps met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and promised further military support from the UK, according to a press statement.

This is Shapps’ second trip to the Ukrainian capital in as many months. He traveled to Ukraine in August in his former role as UK energy security secretary, amid rising tensions with Russia over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

The UK has been one of the main supporters of Ukraine since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and backed separatist rebels in the eastern Donbas region. The UK has so far supplied Ukraine with main battle tanks, long-range cruise missiles, hundreds of thousands of artillery shells and more. Military aid totaled 2.3 billion pounds ($2.8 billion) in 2022, with the same amount pledged for this year. This is in addition to millions of pounds in economic aid and a military training program that aims to have 30,000 Ukrainian recruits trained by the end of the year.

President Zelenskyy thanked the UK for its significant financial, defence and humanitarian support of Ukraine in the time of war. He praised the level of cooperation with the UK in the defence sector, which allows the Ukrainian army to significantly expand its capabilities on the battlefield, in particular by means of long-range weapons.

“We are grateful for your help – military, financial, humanitarian. We greatly appreciate that we can rely on you,” Zelenskyy said.

Shapps reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its readiness to provide further assistance to Ukraine’s defence and security sector. He also expressed his support for Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO and the European Union.

The interlocutors also discussed the issue of bolstering Ukraine’s air defence, which is particularly important in the run-up to the winter season. They agreed to work together on enhancing Ukraine’s resilience to potential threats from Russia.

The meeting was held in the framework of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Ukraine and the UK, which was signed by President Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Boris Johnson in October 2020. The agreement covers various areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, energy, culture and education.

Shapps said that the UK stands with Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and will continue to provide political, diplomatic and military assistance.

“We are proud to be Ukraine’s closest partner in Europe and will continue to work together to defend our shared values and interests,” he said.

The parties also praised the adoption by the Group of Seven at the NATO Summit in Vilnius of a Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine and the start of negotiations with the UK on a bilateral agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine. The agreement would be based on the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which obliges the UK, along with the US and Russia, to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons.

President Zelenskyy expressed his hope that the agreement would be finalized soon and that it would provide a strong deterrent against any aggression from Russia.

“I hope that this agreement will be a powerful signal to our enemy that we are not alone and that we have reliable partners who will stand by us in case of any threat,” Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy thanked Shapps for the UK’s unwavering support and expressed hope for further cooperation in various fields, including energy, trade and investment.

“The UK is a reliable friend and ally of Ukraine. We appreciate your support for our sovereignty, territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic integration,” he said.

A record-breaking 872 migrants successfully crossed the English Channel in 24 hours on Saturday, August 10th, according to the UK Home Office. This surpasses the previous 24-hour high of 756 migrants on August 10th.

The latest influx brings the total number of migrants who have arrived on the shores of southeast England in 2023 to more than 21,000. While this figure is lower than the levels seen at the same point last year, it still presents a significant challenge for the UK government.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative government have made “stopping the boats” a central priority, branding the cross-Channel route as “illegal” and passing legislation to block asylum applications from those arriving without prior authorization. The government has also proposed sending migrants to Rwanda for processing and resettlement, but both policies are currently on hold due to legal challenges.

The influx of migrants has strained the UK’s asylum system, resulting in a growing backlog of more than 175,000 individuals, including children, awaiting an initial decision. This route has also proven to be treacherous, with numerous incidents of capsizes and tragic drownings in the Channel’s waters over the past decade.

The latest surge in Channel crossings is likely to further intensify the political debate in the UK over immigration and asylum policy. The government is under increasing pressure to find a solution to the problem, but it is unclear what measures it will take in the coming months.

What’s Next?

The UK government is likely to continue to focus on its efforts to “stop the boats.” This could include increasing patrols in the Channel, working with French authorities to crack down on migrant smuggling networks, and exploring new legal avenues to deter migrants from making the crossing.

The government may also need to consider further reforms to the asylum system in order to reduce the backlog of cases and ensure that migrants are processed more quickly. However, any such reforms are likely to be controversial, as they could involve changes to the rights of asylum seekers.

The situation in the Channel is likely to remain fluid in the coming months, and it is unclear how many migrants will attempt to cross in the future. However, the latest surge is a reminder of the challenges that the UK faces in managing immigration and asylum.

(With inputs from agencies)

In a significant development aimed at addressing the challenges posed by rising inflation and averting further strike actions, the United Kingdom’s government has announced a substantial pay increase for nearly 150,000 doctors within the National Health Service (NHS).

The pay rise, which will take effect this month, is the result of the government accepting the recommendations of the Independent Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration (DDRB). Doctors across all levels of the NHS will see notable boosts in their salaries, with first-year doctors in training set to receive an impressive 10.3 percent pay increase, while average junior doctors will benefit from an 8.8 percent raise. Consultants, at the senior level of medical practice, will receive a 6 percent increase in their pay.

The government emphasized that this pay rise is designed to strike a balance between controlling inflation and providing substantial salary increments to healthcare staff. Additionally, some NHS personnel will also have the opportunity to benefit from performance-based pay, overtime compensation, pay progression, and pay raises through promotions.

This decision comes after a wave of strikes across various sectors in the UK, including railways, airports, postal services, and law firms, as the nation grapples with record-high inflation. Notably, healthcare workers have been on strike for several months, further intensifying the pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

The pay rise for NHS doctors represents a significant step by the government to address the concerns of medical professionals and maintain the stability of the healthcare sector amidst challenging economic conditions.

The announcement was welcomed by many doctors and medical associations, who expressed their gratitude and relief at the government’s recognition of their hard work and dedication. Dr. Chaand Nagpaul, chair of the British Medical Association (BMA) council, said that the pay rise was “a long overdue recognition of the vital role that doctors play in delivering high-quality care to patients and protecting the health of the nation”.

However, some unions and opposition parties have criticized the pay rise as being too little, too late. They argued that the pay rise does not reflect the real value of doctors’ work and does not compensate for the years of pay freezes and cuts that have eroded their wages. They also pointed out that inflation is expected to rise further in the coming months, eroding the value of the pay rise.

The Unite union, which represents about 100,000 health workers, said that the pay rise was “a slap in the face” for doctors who have been on strike for months. They said that they would continue their industrial action until they receive a fair and substantial pay rise that matches their demands.

The Labour party also slammed the government’s decision as being “out of touch” with the reality of doctors’ lives. They said that the government has failed to address the root causes of the crisis in the NHS, such as chronic underfunding, staff shortages, and poor working conditions. They called for a comprehensive plan to reform and invest in the NHS.

The government has defended its decision as being “fair and affordable” for both doctors and taxpayers. They said that they have listened to the independent advice of the DDRB and have acted accordingly. They also said that they are committed to supporting the NHS and improving its services for patients.

The government’s decision to increase pay for NHS doctors is expected to have significant implications for both the healthcare sector and the wider economy. It remains to be seen whether it will be enough to resolve the ongoing dispute between the government and medical unions, or whether it will spark further unrest and dissatisfaction among other public sector workers who are facing similar challenges.

In a recent statement issued by the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) in the UK, it has been revealed that a technical issue affecting the flight planning system has led to disruptions in air travel.

The issue, which was identified earlier today, has impacted the system’s ability to automatically process flight plans, necessitating manual processing and resulting in traffic flow restrictions, the agency said.

The fault had affected the system’s ability to automatically process flight plans, which means they had to be inputted manually by staff.

The NATS said that the authorities have been working diligently to rectify the situation, and their engineers are collaborating closely with airlines and airports to manage the flights affected by this disruption.

“Our priority is always to ensure that every flight in the UK remains safe, and we are sincerely sorry for the disruption this is causing,” NATS added.

“We are now working closely with airlines and airports to manage the flights affected as efficiently as possible,” it said in a statement.

“Our engineers will be carefully monitoring the system’s performance as we return to normal operations.”

The British Airlines issued a statement acknowledging severe disruptions to their flights due to a major issue with NATS Air Traffic Control in UK airspace. They have made significant schedule changes for the day and advise passengers on short-haul services for Monday, August 28, to check their flight status before heading to the airport. This can be done by visiting www.ba.com/managemybooking or checking their email inbox.

Passengers are advised to stay in touch with their respective airlines for information regarding the status of their flights and potential delays.
London, United Kingdom – The Metropolitan Police Service has reported that a total of 85 individuals were arrested on the opening day of the highly anticipated Notting Hill Carnival, an annual celebration of Caribbean culture and heritage. The event, which took place in the vibrant district of Notting Hill, saw thousands of attendees from across London and beyond.

The police statement, released at 21:30 on Sunday, confirmed that while a considerable number of arrests were made, no serious incidents were recorded during the festivities. Most of the apprehensions were related to offenses such as possession of weapons, drug-related activities, and sexual assaults, the statement revealed.

Ade Adelekan, the Deputy Assistant Commissioner responsible for overseeing the Notting Hill Carnival operation, emphasized the robust response of law enforcement. “Our officers will respond decisively where this takes place, which is evident from the 85 arrests made thus far,” Adelekan stated in the release. He also highlighted that the number of arrests was in line with their projected expectations for the carnival’s first day.

The Notting Hill Carnival, an annual street festival held on the final weekend of August, aims to pay tribute to the rich culture, arts, and heritage of the Caribbean community. The event attracts large crowds and features vibrant parades, music performances, and culinary delights. This year’s celebration commenced without any significant disturbances, thanks to the efficient security measures put in place by the authorities.
