This unprecedented disruption sent shockwaves through the country, leading to an investigation into the cause and potential vulnerabilities in the telecommunications industry.

From the early hours of the morning, customers nationwide found themselves unable to make calls or access the internet, prompting widespread frustration and concern. According to reports from Australian media, this outage has been labeled as the largest telecommunications disruption in the country’s history.

Optus Managing Director, Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, assured the affected customers that the network restoration process was underway. “The good news is that we have found a way to restore the entire network,” she said the DPA news agency. However, Rosmarin emphasized that this process would be gradual and may require customers to restart their devices as services were gradually brought back online.

By early evening, some relief arrived as services were reportedly restored, but the incident has raised important questions about the resilience of Australia’s telecommunications infrastructure. One key factor contributing to the prolonged outage was the reliance of Optus employees on the same network that experienced the disruption. Cybersecurity expert Rachel Falk speculated that this internal reliance may have hindered the company’s ability to effectively communicate and resolve the issue.

While this outage has been resolved for now, it serves as a critical wake-up call for Australia’s telecommunications sector.

UPDATE

The Optus Network has been restored and most services should now be back online. The exercises will see major vessels from the Japan Self-Defense Forces, the US Navy, and the Royal Australian Navy stationed near the Philippines.

Japan’s participation in these exercises includes the deployment of its largest destroyer, the Izumo, which is undergoing conversion into a de facto aircraft carrier. The focus of these maneuvers, as reported, is to closely monitor the activities of Chinese vessels in the contested waters.

The decision to conduct these joint exercises comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between China and the Philippines. A recent incident involving a Chinese coast guard vessel firing a water cannon at a smaller Philippine boat has further strained relations between the two nations. The incident, which occurred on August 5, hindered a Philippine resupply mission.

In response, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) issued a strong condemnation of the “dangerous maneuvers and illegal use of water cannons” by the Chinese coast guard near Ayungin Shoal, also known as Second Thomas Shoal. China, in turn, asserted its sovereignty over the Nansha (Spratly) Islands and adjacent waters, claiming that two cargo ships and two PCG vessels had entered its territorial waters without permission.

Ayungin Shoal, where the recent incident took place, forms part of the larger dispute over the Spratly Islands—an archipelago contested by China and several other Asian nations, including the Philippines. The Philippines famously grounded a naval transport ship, the BRP Sierra Madre, on the reef in 1999 to house a contingent of marines.

As the joint naval exercises approach, regional and global observers are closely monitoring the developments in the South China Sea, where geopolitical tensions continue to shape the maritime landscape.

(With inputs from agencies)

The post Japan, US, and Australia to Conduct Joint Naval Exercises in South China Sea Amid Escalating Tensions appeared first on gnbnow.

Man Arrested After Making Threats on Kuala Lumpur-Bound Flight from Sydney

GNB Desk

Australia

Sydney, Australia – Federal police officers have arrested a 45-year-old man who allegedly made threats while onboard a Malaysia Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur. The case was heard by a panel of three judges on Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday evening, Djokovic said he was “extremely disappointed” by the ruling but respected it. He released a statement shortly after three Federal Court judges unanimously upheld a decision made Friday by Immigration Minister Alex Hawke to cancel the 34-year-old Serb’s visa on public interest grounds because he is not vaccinated.

“I am extremely disappointed with the Court ruling to dismiss my application for judicial review of the Minister’s decision to cancel my visa, which means I cannot stay in Australia and participate in the Australian Open,” Djokovic said.

“I respect the Court’s ruling and I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country,” he added.

Djokovic said he was “uncomfortable” that the focus had been on him since his visa was first canceled on arrival at Melbourne’s airport on Jan. 6.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said it respects the decision of the Federal Court.

“The situation with Djokovic is disappointing for everyone involved – not only for the player himself but for other players, the tournament, and the fans,” ITF added.

“As an organization which hosted over 1900 international events all over the world in 2021, the ITF has first-hand experience of the huge challenges and rigour needed to navigate the pandemic and the regulations that vary country by country. These protocols need to be clearly communicated in a timely manner and the proper process must be respected by all for it to be effective.

“And while the ITF believes that full vaccination is a personal decision, we believe this is the responsible action we must all take in order to ease restrictions and avoid such occurrences happening in the future,” it said in a statement.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcomed what he described as the “decision to keep our borders strong and keep Australians safe.”

“It’s now time to get on with the Australian Open and get back to enjoying tennis over the summer,” Morrison said in a statement

“This cancellation decision was made on health, safety and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so.I welcome the decision to keep our borders strong and keep Australians safe,” it said in a statement.

Also Read: Australia cancels Novak Djokovic’s visa 2nd time ahead of the Australian Open

Djokovic had to spend five days in detention in Melbourne after his visa was first time revoked by the authorities last week.

Earlier on Monday, a judge reinstated Djokovic’s visa and ordered his release.
